Celebrity appearances at SXSW prompts discussion about mental health

Pop star and actress Selena Gomez and New York Jets defensive lineman Solomon Thomas led a panel discussing mental health at the South by Southwest conference. Gomez has been public about her bipolar disorder diagnosis and mental health crisis, while Solomon discussed anxiety and grief after his sister died by suicide. In response, social media posts praised Gomez and Solomon for speaking out and discussed the need for more awareness and transparency around mental health challenges.

Recommendation: When celebrities or public figures disclose or discuss specific mental health conditions, this provides an opportunity to ensure that target populations are aware of mental health resources, including suicide prevention. Messaging may also educate about the conditions that are trending on social media—like bipolar disorder—by  including accurate information on symptoms and treatment.
